Whether you choose to relax in your room or sit on the balcony and take in the view, Hemlock Lodge offers the perfect environment to unwind after a day of exploring the park.

Carson and I stayed in a room connected to the main lodge. It is important to note what I mean by rustic charm. You are not walking into your ideal wooden cottage room. Hemlock Lodge offers modern electronic amenities for a convenient stay but maintains a classic rustic charm in its decor and furnishings, which reflect the lodge’s timeless character.

If you would like more of a modern overall stay, there are options located within driving range of the park.

A Gateway to Outdoor Adventures at Natural Bridge State Park

Natural Bridge State Resort Park is known for its breathtaking views, unique rock formations, lush forests and is filled with the best family-friendly hikes in Kentucky. Hemlock Lodge serves as an excellent base for outdoor activities.

The park is home to over 2,000 acres of stunning landscape, including a wide variety of hiking trails. Many of these trails lead to some of the most iconic features of the area, including Natural Bridge, a natural sandstone arch that offers one of the best panoramic views in Kentucky.

Natural Bridge State Park Travel Tips

One of the most popular trails is the Original Trail, which leads to the famous Natural Bridge. It’s a relatively short hike, but it is steep and can be challenging for some.

For those who prefer a less strenuous option, there is a sky lift that takes you up to the bridge, offering an easy way to reach the top without breaking a sweat.

Carson and I visited the park during spring break and during that time the sky lift was not in operation. If you need the sky lift for transportation call ahead to see if it is in operation.

Once at the Natural Bridge, you will be treated to a spectacular view of the gorge below. On clear days, the view stretches for miles, offering a unique perspective of the surrounding forest and rock formations.

It’s an ideal spot for photography, so don’t forget your camera. The bridge itself is a fantastic spot for sightseeing and simply taking in the beauty of the area. My son and I sat on the bridge for some time just taking in the surrounding beauty.

In addition to the hiking trails, the park offers plenty of opportunities for other outdoor activities, including fishing, birdwatching and picnicking. The Red River Gorge is one of Kentucky’s top destinations for rock climbing, attracting climbers from around the world.

Seasonal Beauty at Natural Bridge State Park

One of the most incredible aspects of Hemlock Lodge and Natural Bridge State Resort Park is how the landscape changes with the seasons. Each season brings a new set of colors, sights, and experiences, making it a year-round destination.

Spring is a magical time at the park. The forest comes alive with fresh green leaves, wildflowers, and blooming trees. Hikers will find the trails lush and vibrant, and the weather is mild, making it a perfect time for outdoor activities.

Summer brings warm temperatures and longer days, allowing visitors to explore the park to their heart’s content. This is the peak season for hiking and climbing, and the park’s facilities are fully operational. It’s the ideal time to take advantage of the lodge’s amenities and enjoy the outdoor pool.

Summer is the season I recommend going if you are going to stay at Hemlock Lodge. The Lodge offers a variety of activities and equipment you can use on the pond during your stay. We had a room that overlooked the pool and the pond, which would have been perfect if it was not during the winter/early spring season.

Fall is the most popular time to visit Natural Bridge State Park. The fall foliage in the park is absolutely stunning, with vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows transforming the landscape. The cooler weather makes hiking comfortable, and the views from the trails and the lodge are simply breathtaking.

Winter offers a peaceful retreat for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life. The park quiets down, and the area is often covered in a soft blanket of snow. While some trails may be more challenging during the winter months, those who brave the cold will be rewarded with solitude and serene winter landscapes.

Dining at Hemlock Lodge

After a day of outdoor activities, you’ll want to refuel with a delicious meal. Hemlock Lodge features the Hemlock Grill, where guests can enjoy a variety of meals with a view of the surrounding landscape.

The Restaurant serves a range of dishes, from hearty steaks to fresh seafood and lighter fare. The menu highlights local ingredients, and the meals reflect the flavors of Kentucky.

The Hemlock Grill offers both indoor and outdoor seating when weather permits, allowing you to dine while enjoying the natural beauty of the park. In the evening, the restaurant has a cozy atmosphere, perfect for relaxing after a day of exploration.

For a more nature-immersed experience, there are also picnic areas around the park, where you can enjoy a packed lunch while surrounded by nature. Whether you choose to dine at the Hemlock Grill or bring a picnic to have in the park, you will be able to enjoy the beautiful surroundings while savoring delicious food.

Carson and I decided to order food to go from Hemlock Grill. It was just a walk away from our room. We took our dinner back to the room and watched the movie Twister.

It is important to note that when we were waiting for our food on a Sunday, we ran into a family we knew back from home. They rented out a nearby cabin and stated not many restaurant options are open besides Hemlock Grill. Carson and I did not dine anywhere else, so this would be something to look into.
