If you are looking for a beginner rock climbing experience, the Via Ferrata through Southeast Mountain guides is the perfect opportunity. Even if you want to try something a little more challenging, they have guided climbing in Red River George.
My son and I did the Via Ferrate experience, and it was one of our favorite activities my son and I have ever done. It introduced us to an entire new world of climbing that we are excited to explore more of.
What is Via Ferrata Rock Climbing?
Well, first off, it is just a fun word to say:) But, Via Ferrata is an Italian word meaning “iron way”. Today it is a fun rocking climb adventure but back during the time of World War 1, it was used as a way to transport troops across the mountains.
In this style of climbing the climber clips into a cable system that is secured to a rock. You progress through the cable system that you are linked up to, clipping in and out. During the path of the cable that you follow, you will have opportunities to ascend, descend and be transverse alongside a cliff. You will have the aid of iron rods and foot rungs to assist you along your route with multiple different exit points in case you need a break.

I would think Via Ferrata as a middle point between scrambling and rock climbing. Even though this is a beginner level of rock climbing, I do recommend two things. First, not to be afraid of heights and second, decent physical condition because it is a physically laboring activity.
I believe Southeast Mountain guides are open during a range of different weather conditions, but I would recommend going during good weather conditions and try to avoid the rain, snow and frigid temperatures.
It drizzled for a short time during our climb and it made the rods slippery and grasping the clips and reclipping back on the next joint was more difficult.

When you arrive, staff will check you in, and you will participate in a 45-minute hands-on orientation where you’ll learn safety features and how to handle your equipment.
At the end of orientation you will have to show that you understood the directions and will have to properly complete the demo course before being able to participate in the climbs.
Safety is always a top priority with Southeast Mountain Guides. Their experienced staff ensures you have the proper training and equipment. They take time to assess each individual’s ability, so you’re always comfortable. Their commitment to safety makes them a top choice for outdoor adventures in the region.
You will not have a personal guide after completing the orientation course. Supervision will be provided by the staff at all times while going through the course at your own pace.
I do recommend buying a pair of climbing gloves from inside their shop before starting orientation. It will help you grip the bars better and save you from tearing up your hands.

You have until dusk, so climb until your heart’s content. Since they have multiple exit points, it is easy to divide up the entire course and provide yourself breaks.
They do not sell food here though so pack yourself a picnic and refreshments. My son and I picked up Subway on our way into town. I also packed other hand snacks, water and gatorade. The course is located right behind the office you check-in at. So rest assured you will have access to a bathroom if needed.

The Gorge offers a variety of activities beyond climbing. Hiking through the lush forests is an unforgettable experience. The natural arches, caves, and waterfalls provide breathtaking scenery. Southeast Mountain Guides can tailor a trip based on your interests. Whether you want to climb, hike, or both, they’ve got you covered.

“In climbing you are always faced with new problems in which you must perform using intuitive movements, and then later analyze them to figure out why they work, and then learn from them.” – Wolfgang Gullich
