Best Time to Visit: November–April (dry season)
Highlights: Volcano Maderas & Concepción, San Ramón Waterfall
How to Get There: 1-hour ferry from San Jorge
Getting Around: Scooter, taxi, or bicycle rentals available
Essentials: Hiking shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent, water bottle
Day 1: Arrival and Exploring Moyogalpa
Morning:
Your adventure begins with a boat ride from San Jorge on the mainland to Ometepe Island. The ferry ride takes about an hour and offers stunning views of Lake Cocibolca and the island’s volcanic peaks.
Ferries depart regularly from San Jorge to Moyogalpa or San José del Sur. You can find the current Ometepe ferry schedule here (note: schedules can change seasonally, so double-check before your trip).

Once you arrive in Moyogalpa, the main town on Ometepe, you’ll feel the island’s laid-back vibe immediately. From here, you can easily find transportation to your accommodation.
Upon arriving, check into your hotel or guesthouse. There are various accommodation options in Moyogalpa, from charming eco-lodges to comfortable hotels.
For a more immersive experience which I always recommend, consider staying at a lakeside retreat with a view of the volcanoes. I went with a group of friends, and we stayed at Hotel Villa Paraiso which offers direct beautiful beachfronts and accommodated our large group.

Afternoon: Visit the Ometepe Museum
Once you’re feeling refreshed, take a short walk to the Ometepe Museum if you end up staying at a place in town.
This small museum provides insight into the island’s history, culture, and biodiversity. You’ll find exhibits on the indigenous people of Ometepe, the island’s volcanic activity, and its rich flora and fauna. It’s a great introduction to the island’s story.

Evening: Sunset at Playa Santo Domingo
End your first day with a relaxing walk along Playa Santo Domingo, one of Ometepe’s most beautiful beaches.
The calm waters and stunning views of the volcanoes make it the perfect spot to watch the sunset. You can dip your toes in the water or simply enjoy the peaceful ambiance.

Day 2: Hiking and Adventure at Volcano Maderas
Morning: Start Your Volcano Maderas Hike
After breakfast, get ready for a day of adventure. Ometepe Island is famous for its volcanoes, and one of the best ways to experience them is by hiking to the top of Volcano Maderas.
This dormant volcano is located on the western side of the island and stands at 1,394 meters (4,573 feet) above sea level.
The Volcano Maderas hike is an amazing adventure for experienced hikers. The trail takes you through a cloud forest to the crater lake at the summit.
The Maderas Volcano hike is a challenging yet rewarding experience. It takes about 5-6 hours to reach the summit, so be prepared for a physically demanding trek.
You’ll need sturdy hiking boots, water, and snacks. A local guide is recommended for safety and to enhance your experience.

As you ascend the volcano, you’ll pass through dense cloud forests filled with towering trees, colorful flowers, and a variety of wildlife.
The trail is a mix of uphill climbs, rocky paths, and muddy stretches, so it’s essential to be in good physical condition.
Along the way, your guide will point out local flora and fauna, including monkeys, birds, and the famous Ometepe howler monkeys.
Afternoon: Summit Views and the Crater Lake
The highlight of the hike is the summit, where you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of the island and Lake Cocibolca below.
The volcanic crater also contains a small lagoon, where you can take a break and enjoy the serene surroundings. After a well-earned rest, begin your descent back to the base of the volcano.
If you love rewarding hikes through nature, you might also enjoy my guide to Cathedral Rock in Sedona – one of the most stunning hikes in Arizona.

After your hike, head to Finca El Porvenir (located on the slopes of Volcano Maderas), a peaceful retreat where you can relax and unwind in the natural springs pool.
This tranquil spot is known for its rejuvenating thermal pools, perfect for easing your muscles after a long day of hiking. The mineral-rich waters of the natural springs are believed to have therapeutic properties, making this the ideal place to relax and refresh.
The serene surroundings of Finca El Porvenir allow you to soak in the beauty of the island while enjoying the warm waters. You can also explore the farm and enjoy a fresh, organic meal at the restaurant overlooking the lush landscape.

Alternative Option: Take a Refreshing Dip at Ojo de Agua
If you’re looking for a more lively or family-friendly way to cool off after your hike, consider heading to Ojo de Agua, a popular natural spring-fed swimming area located near Santo Domingo.
Surrounded by tropical greenery, this crystal-clear turquoise pool is fed by an underground river and is known for its refreshing, mineral-rich waters.
Unlike the more serene atmosphere at Finca El Porvenir, Ojo de Agua offers a more social environment with amenities like a small restaurant, hammocks, and rope swings that add a fun touch to the experience. Be careful on the rope swings. They are very fun, but I almost did not complete a backflip in time and could have gotten very hurt.
It’s a great alternative if you’re traveling with kids, a big group of people, or want to enjoy a refreshing swim in a vibrant setting.
Whether you want to float peacefully under the canopy or splash around in the cool water, Ojo de Agua is another wonderful way to experience the natural beauty of Ometepe Island.

Evening: Relax and Recharge
After your time at the natural springs, return to your hotel and take time to relax.
A massage or a dip in a swimming pool can be an excellent way to ease your muscles after a long day of hiking.
If you’re hungry, enjoy a hearty meal at one of the island’s many restaurants, where you can savor fresh local ingredients.

Day 3: Explore Volcano Concepción and Visit the San Ramón Waterfall
Morning: Concepción Volcano Tour
Day 3 of your Ometepe itinerary takes you to the eastern side of the island to explore the active Volcano Concepción.
At 1,610 meters (5,280 feet), Concepción is taller and more challenging to hike than Maderas, but the views are worth the effort.
For those who prefer a less strenuous activity, you can opt for a boat tour to view the volcano from the lake.
If you’re up for the challenge, join a guided hike up Concepción. The trek can take up to 8 hours, and it’s important to be prepared with the right gear and a guide who knows the trail.
The hike to the summit rewards you with panoramic views of the island, Lake Cocibolca, and the surrounding area.
Afternoon: Visit San Ramón Waterfall
After your hike, take a break and head to the San Ramón Waterfall, one of the most iconic natural attractions on Ometepe Island.
The waterfall is nestled in the foothills of Volcano Maderas and is surrounded by lush jungle. San Ramón Waterfall is one of the top things to do in Ometepe.
This picturesque cascade drops 40 meters into a serene pool below.
The hike to the waterfall takes about 1 to 2 hours, depending on your pace. The path is relatively easy, with beautiful scenery along the way.
Once you arrive at the waterfall, take time to admire the cascading water, which drops over 130 feet into a crystal-clear pool below. You can take a refreshing swim or simply relax and enjoy the tranquility.

Hiking to San Ramón Waterfall:
- Distance: 1.5-2 hours hike each way (depending on pace).
- Difficulty: Moderate to challenging. Prepare for a well-maintained, but sometimes slippery trail.
- Access: The waterfall is located on the southern side of Volcano Maderas.
- Best for: Nature lovers and hikers.
Evening: Dinner and Local Culture
After your day of hiking and exploring, enjoy a delicious dinner at one of the local restaurants in Moyogalpa or nearby.
Many restaurants offer Nicaraguan dishes like gallo pinto (rice and beans), grilled meats, and fresh seafood.
If you’re interested in learning more about the local culture, you can visit a nearby village to see traditional handicrafts or attend a cultural performance.
Ometepe is rich in indigenous traditions, and the island’s communities often host events that highlight their history and customs.
Day 4: Stroll through the Charco Verde Reserve & Departure
Morning: Hike Through Charco Verde Reserve
On your last day in Ometepe, take a morning stroll through the Charco Verde Reserve near San José del Sur.
This ecological reserve has easy trails through lush forest where you might spot monkeys, birds, and reptiles.
Walk along the trails surrounding the lagoon to enjoy the views and spot wildlife. It is a beautiful and peaceful place to walk, relax, and observe nature.
Afternoon: Departure from Ometepe
Before you head back to the mainland, enjoy a leisurely lunch at one of the local restaurants, soaking in the last moments of your Ometepe adventure.
You can take a final dip in the lake or simply relax on the shores of the beach before boarding the ferry back to San Jorge.
The photo below is one of my favorite pictures I took on this trip.
It is one of the most serene views from our time on Ometepe Island—volcanoes on the horizon, gardens below, and a quiet village vibe that made us feel completely at peace.
These kinds of moments were what made Ometepe feel so special.
