SUP Kentucky has partnered with local experts to offer a rare and exclusive opportunity for a Red River George Adventure. Paddling through these flooded mines by crystal-clear kayaks equipped with LED lights that make the experience even more surreal.
The LED lights produce a glowing effect underneath your crystal kayak. You are able to pick from a few different colors but of course Carson picked blue for our kayak. This guided tour lasted around 1.5 hours.
As you venture into the cave’s cool, damp depths, the world above you fades away. The gentle sound of water dripping from the high cavern walls and the echo of your paddles breaking the silence create an atmosphere unlike any other.
The glow from your kayak illuminates the water below, casting vibrant colors that reflect off the cavern walls and fill the space with an ethereal light. It’s as if you’ve entered a secret worldly realm.
I would not say this is a thrill-seeking experience, but it definitely is unique. It is a slow paddle, floating experience through the mine. It is more of a space of complete serenity.
The glow of your kayak lights will be the only source of illumination as you paddle through the dark cavern. The only break in silence you will hear is the sound of your paddles cutting through the water, the occasional drip of water from the cavern ceiling. Or our guide also did a lot of “dad” jokes, which I personally loved. While also explaining the history of the mine.
No matter what time of year you go, I recommend dressing warm. The mine is 50 degrees all year round. Once you enter the mine and you get to the dock, you will have to remove your shoes.

Tips for Your Crystal Kayak Glow Tour Through the Cavern:
Dress warmly
Even in the summer, underground caverns can get chilly. Wear layers to ensure you stay comfortable while paddling through the cool waters. You do remove your shoes once you get to the docks. You will only have on your socks in the kayak. I would double up on the socks and I definitely recommend buying hand warmers before you go. Once you get into the kayak, activate the hand warmer. Then stick them in your socks against the soles of your feet. It is cold! This helped greatly at keeping us warm inside the cold cavern. I also recommend bringing a pair of light gloves that still makes it easy to hold onto the paddle. If you forget gloves but arrive at the check-in locations they do have gloves you can rent onsite.
Bring waterproof essentials
While you’re unlikely to get soaked. It’s a good idea to bring a waterproof bag for your phone or camera to capture the magic of the experience. I personally found it hard to take pictures. Luckily, they offered to opt in for the digital photo album for an additional cost.
Arrive early
The tour is designed to begin promptly on time. Arrive a little early to get settled, get your gear, meet your guides, and prepare for an unforgettable adventure. Sup Kentucky will provide the kayak, helmet and headlamp, personal flotation device and paddle. Your job is to dress WARM and enjoy the small group glow in the dark experience.
