If you do not like the traditional hotel or resort stay or maybe want to try something a little different, this is a great alternative located just 20 minutes outside of the south rim entrance to the Grand Canyon’s scenic wonders. You have all your amenities but in the heart of nature. What better way to be connected with the great outdoors than in such a unique way where you are provided a perfect playground in nature but have the comforts of home.

When you arrive near the entrance of Clear Sky Resorts you will be led down a rugged path in order to reach the resort. Hopefully by the time you go, they fill in a lot of the potholes but take a minute to enjoy the drive down this stony road because you will see a beautiful mountain range in the midst of a desert landscape.

Clear sky Resorts is of individual domes, each having its own theme. We stayed in the “Stairway To The Stars” dome. If you have a family, this is not the dome for you but other domes on the premises would be perfect for families. But couples or single parents with one kid, like myself (if your child doesn’t mind sharing a bed with you) or a party of one, this is the perfect and coolest dome experience.

In our dome, there was a winding staircase that brought us up to a bed. The bed hung from the ceiling and the top of the dome was see-through, therefore we were able to see the stars at night. It was a bit of a cloudy visualization through the ceiling of our dome but still seeable and a neat experience as you fall asleep.

Each dome has a panoramic window that brings the outside environment in. Our dome had a cool chair that spun in circles, a telescope, an indoor electric fireplace and a hammock on our deck. Our indoor fireplace almost lit the curtains on fire, so please be safe while using. It was an error in the fireplace (pooling of a liquid), so we unplugged it, reported it and did not try to utilize it again.

Clear Sky Resorts offers an onsite breakfast and dinner food truck. I would recommend not going during prime eating hours. The best time for us to grab food was right when they opened because the line and wait can get long but you definitely won’t be disappointed by the quality of the food, it was delicious.

Since we are talking about food, please be mindful that you are in the middle of nature. I do not recommend keeping food in your dome unless you want to welcome little critters. I would recommend keeping it in a sealed cooler if you do have food inside the dome, or we just kept our snacks in the car.

Clear Sky Resorts did a great job at incorporating family fun activities while embracing the beauty and simplicity of the natural surroundings. 

You will not be disappointed from the array of onsite activities provided such as:

  • Roasting smores next to a firepit
  • Lit frisbee golf course at night
  • Giant jump pillow which my son and I just loved
  • Yard games
  • Board games 
  • A playground
  • Mini bicycle racetrack that brings back memories of playing Mario cart
  • Music
  • Stargazing
  • Not to mention the families that we met and the kids running around play ghost in the graveyard together at night………this place was a highlight of our trip.

Below is a list of posts to continue reading about our adventures in Arizona and an overall summary of our trip.

Carson and I got to experience the beauty of Arizona. The hills, mountains, red rocks and desert terrain captivated us throughout its change in scenery. We took up our wings in a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon, did some hiking, went glamping, saw the red rocks from the sky, and experienced the outback off-road. Overall, this was a great, very memorable vacation.

If you have more time than we did, I have a few recommendations below:

One

I recommend staying a couple more days in Sedona to do a few more different hiking trails. I would also have added one more day at the Grand Canyon too for another day of hiking.

Two

If you have even a few more days you can push on top of that, then I would recommend going to Page Arizona to Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend and then into Utah to Lake Powell (rent a jet ski for the day).

Three

If you need a good car break between Sedona and the Grand Canyon, I recommend Bearizona in Williams, AZ.

Bearizona is a great place to stop. This attraction provided the perfect leg break from the car after we finished the drive-through attraction. If you have never seen a live bear in the wild, this would provide a great safe opportunity because bears are free to roam the drive-through exhibit.
